Navratri is a nine-day festival during which nine forms of the goddess Durga are worshiped. The festival also has nine colors, which are believed to represent the nine planets, and nine nights, during which nine different forms of the goddess are worshiped. It's celebrated by Hindus all over India and abroad.

It is the most important festival of the Hindu religion and is celebrated all over India by Hindus. The nine-day long festival starts from Dhanteras and ends on Chaitra Purnima. During this period, Goddess Shakti is worshiped for getting rid of evil spirits and bad luck. This festival is also known as “Durga Puja” or “Shakthi puja”. The main deity of this festival is Devi Durga. She is considered the supreme power of the universe. Her name means ‘the destroyer’. She is also called Mahishasurmardini (Mahishademon king; mardini destroyer).

The celebration of this festival has been started since ancient times. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva was pleased with his wife Parvati when she gave birth to a son named Kartikeya. He blessed her that she would have a child who would be very powerful and would defeat demons. After some time, Parvati conceived again and gave birth to another son. When he was born, she realized that this baby boy was not like other babies. His face had no human features but resembled those of an animal. So, she named him Skanda. Later on, she got pregnant for the third time and gave birth to a girl. She named her daughter Shitala. Both these children were very strong and they defeated many demon kings. They are worshiped as the deities of war and victory respectively.

The first day of Navratri is called Dhanteras. People light firecrackers to welcome Goddess Durga and offer prayers and make offerings at temples.

On the second day of Navratri, people start preparing food items such as sweets, snacks, etc. These foods are offered to Goddess Durga.

On the third day of Navratri, people visit temples and offer their prayers.

On the fourth day of Navratri, devotees perform pooja, offering flowers, fruits, incense sticks, sandalwood paste, coconut oil, milk, ghee, water, sugar, rice, wheat flour, vegetables, fruits, etc., to Goddess Durga. Devotees sing devotional songs while performing poojas.

On the fifth day of Navratri, worshippers cleanse their bodies and minds. They take baths and apply sacred ash on their foreheads. They wear new clothes and decorate themselves with fresh flowers.

On the sixth day of Navratri women prepare special dishes for family members. Menfolk enjoy these delicacies.

On the seventh day of Navratri, the men go out hunting while the women stay home and cook delicious meals. The women also pray for the safety of the men and for a successful hunt.

On the eighth day of Navratri families gather together and celebrate Holi.

On the ninth day of Navratri everyone goes back to work.

Dussehra or Vijayadashmi is a Hindu festival that falls on the tenth day (or sometimes ninth) of the dark half of the Hindu month of Ashwin, generally in October/November. On this day, people worship Lord Rama, who was exiled from Ayodhya for fourteen years. This is considered an important day in the life of many Hindus.

Navratri festival is celebrated in different parts of India. Different states have their own traditions and rituals related to this festival. For example, in Maharashtra, people offer sweet dishes to Goddess Durga. They also play musical instruments during the night. In Karnataka, people offer prayers to goddess Lakshmi. They also offer sweets to her. In Andhra Pradesh, people offer prayers to Goddess Saraswati. They also offer sweets and drinks to her. In Tamil Nadu, people offer prayers to God Muruga. They also offer sweets. In Kerala, people offer prayers to Lord Ayyappa. They also offer sweets, fruits and coconut.
